Why You Should Use All Natural Body Lotions
When you think of all natural body lotions and body butters, what comes to mind?
Nothing artificial, right? But how many times have you seen “all natural” on the front label only to turn it over and find ingredients like sodium benzoate, polysorbate 60 or 80, parabens, EDTA, and more. The FDA has told us that these ingredients are safe, usually in small doses (read the fine print).
Every time you spread something on your skin, your body absorbs it. Does a small amount really matter? Well…when your facial cleanser, facial moisturizer, soap, body lotion, shampoo, hair mousse, deodorant, and make up ALL contain synthetic chemical ingredients, can you see how that adds up? What is scary is that these chemicals are in almost everything you use. And don’t get me started on food products!
Why Are Chemicals So Harmful?
The cautions about harmful ingredients are everywhere. There are documentaries on Netflix, articles in magazines, and warnings all over the internet. For example, try doing an internet search on one of the chemicals listed above (or below) and you will see what I mean. Allow me to share one of them…sodium benzoate.
Sodium Benzoate is an artificially produced chemical preservative often found in many products, especially soft drinks (like I said, these chemicals are in everything). It has been considered safe in small doses, but when combined with Vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid), it can produce a chemical called benzene, which has been linked to certain blood cancers.
Yeah, there it is, the “C” word. We all know somebody who has it, or had it, both of my parents died of cancer, which is why I’m on a mission to clean up my life choices and why I hope you’ll consider doing the same.

Maybe you’re like me, I’ve changed my diet to include more fruits and vegetables, eliminated a lot of processed foods, and added exercise to my daily routine. Why? Because it’s not just about wanting to live longer, it’s about quality of life, my friends.
I am an RN (registered nurse) and I talk to people every day that have made poor decisions throughout their lives which led to devastating illnesses, and these people suffer. Daily. If you could avoid that, even minimize it, wouldn’t that be a good thing? Yes!
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I eat chocolate and have a little ice cream, oh, and I love wine (!!!), but I digress… My point is that changing your skin care products to those with more natural ingredients is one more (EASY!) thing you can do to stay healthy. So how to you know what to look for? Hey! That’s what I’m here for. Let’s first start with…
You Gotta Read The Labels – Mixing the Good With the Bad
One day, years ago, I decided to examine the labels on my own stuff. [Insert Big Sigh] It was a sad day when I read the ingredients listed on my favorite, supposedly all natural body lotions and found they were nothing more than lavender mixed with a bunch of chemicals from a lab. Sure, my skin felt smooth and smelled great, but at what cost?
Take a look at the “Other Ingredients” found in one of the previous favorite lotions:
Aqua (water), caprylic/capric triglyceride, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, stearic acid, cetearyl alcohol, squalane, dimethicone, aloe leaf juice, camellia sinensis leaf extract, ginkgo biloba leaf extract, lavender flower/leaf stem extract, aleurites moluccana seed oil, sunflower seed oil, evening primrose oil, ascorbic acid, citric acid, glycolic acid, lecithin, polysorbate 60, potassium hydroxide, salicylic acid, sodium hyaluronate, superoxide dismutase, tocopheryl acetate, xanthan gum, benzoic acid, glycereth-2 cocoate, phenoxyethanol, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, fragrance.
Makes your head spin, doesn’t it??
Now don’t let all the long names fool you, there are some really good ingredients mixed in there, some that are actually recognizable (aloe, ginkgo biloba, lavender, a few different oils), and they advertise NO Parabens, SLS, Petrolatum, Artificial Colors or Phthalates…fantastic!! But this lotion definitely includes way too many chemicals to be considered “natural” as the label advertises.
And Now the Good Stuff
Over the years, I’ve tried several lotions, creams, butters, balms, cakes, soaps, cleansers, serums….you name it! And they all claim to be wonderful. Some were…meh. Some were…ick. Is it possible to find one you would want to use on a daily basis, and dare I say, buy AGAIN? Yup. You betcha.
Look at the ingredients in this TRULY all natural body butter:
Shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, and essential oils.
That’s it, no chemicals, nothing toxic! And let me tell you, this one is rich, thick, and divine – long lasting, one of my favorites. What I am saying is that you can have soft, beautiful, nourished skin, LOVE the products, and feel good about what you are using. When there are safe alternatives that come from nature with minimal artificial ingredients, making the switch is a no brainer.
